Rift Valley Lakes have been experiencing rising water levels
As scientists are trying to unravel why Rift Valley lakes are swelling, one micro-blogging site Twitter user lit up social media by his giving out his theory.
Some scientists say the rising levels of the lakes are a result of global warming and environmental degradation while seismologists attribute it to tectonic movements of the earth’s crust.
Using Lake Baringo to explain his theory, the tweep identified as Kuria, explained that the lake has an underground inlet from the Indian Ocean. He went on to add that the inlet starts near Malindi.
“L. Baringo has an underground inlet from Indian Ocean. Reason for rising waters. It was discovered by Stephen Wakinyanjui. Inlet starts near Malindi,” he wrote.
He went on to add: “Remember those school trips to the neighbouring L. Bogoria eating boiled eggs and maize from the geysers? The hot springs and geysers are no more. It’s all connected.”

However, according to Natureworldnews, the lake has freshwater without any visible outlet. It instead seeps into the lavas on its north side. The Becht study looks at hydraulic connectivity between L. Naivasha & others lakes and concludes that there is no link between Lake Baringo and the Indian Ocean because geology wouldn’t enable it.
Several tweeps mocked at his theory but he later apologized for the “misleading” research at the time of this publication. Other flooding lakes included Lake Naivasha, Lake Bogoria and Lake Nakuru. Once 20 kilometres apart, Lake Baringo and Lake Bogoria have grown close to another due to the increased water levels which has led to the migration of flamingos.

I thought rivers flow downstream. How can a river flow from Coast to Baring? https://t.co/tm4h9ejN8z

Lake Baringo is a fresh water lake. The Indian Ocean has salty water. On top of the overall joke of an idea that water can naturally backflow from the fucking ocean back inland, the above-mentioned facts make it clear that you are on drugs. https://t.co/iipZi8UE50
