A security guard in Nairobi has earned accolades from his employer and Kenyans on social media for a rare show of integrity.
Mr John Mugendi, an employee of BM Security picked a client’s misplaced handbag with cash, an iPhone and 3 cheques at the Sarit Center in January this year.
Instead of taking the very attractive route of keeping the items to himself, opted to trace the rightful owner of the bag carrying Ksh. 103,206 and other personal effects which he surrendered in good faith.
A good number of social media users who lauded Mr Mugendi for his gesture called on the BM Security management to consider offering him a promotion.
His employer, a company providing a wide range of security services to the corporates, the banking sector, diplomatic and residential properties, finally gave Mugendi an Award of Integrity certificate at their headquarters this morning.
“Our employees are the embodiment of integrity and professionalism. John Mugendi recovered a handbag containing Kshs.103,260, 3 cheques, iPhone and other personal items misplaced by a client. We celebrate you for upholding our core value of honesty and integrity. Kudos,” a statement issued by BM Security on Tuesday read in part.
Reacting to the post, some Kenyans sought to know whether Mr Mugendi was offered monetary appreciation while other said his decision and character was priceless.
“I think he did it for something far greater than monetary compensation. Hard to put value on this man’s integrity. He will get his reward from God,” Ayub Saalim wrote on Twitter.
