Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed’s controversial trip to Dubai remained the talk of the town for a long time as Kenyans raised questions on the man behind the expensive jet that flew the two out to visit their ailing party leader.
The Mombasa County Boss and the Minority Chief Whip of the National Assembly had travelled to check up on Raila Odinga who had undergone surgery at a German facility based in the UAE.
Prior to their visit to Dubai, Raila had already spent there a few weeks as he had flown urgently out the country to receive immediate treatment.
Though many at that time had magnified the surgery and noted that the former Prime Minister was in a critical condition, the family later went on to dismiss the claims, deeming the surgery as just a minor one.
For the first time since the incident, Raila has exclusively opened up on his illness in public and set the record straight over the provocative details that had emerged on both his treatment in Dubai and the headline-making visit from Sultan and Junet.
At the time, social media was awash with reports that a mystery handbag spotted inside the luxurious aircraft belonged to a popular Kenyan socialite Natalie Tewa.
The information, which was first leaked by blogger Edgar Obare, went on to suggest that her presence inside the private jet was courtesy of her alleged new lover Hassan Joho.
Speaking during an interview with the Nation, Raila revealed that he was diagnosed with a condition known as the Spinal Canal Stenosis which made him take the fast low-key trip to Dubai to receive immediate treatment.
Raila made it clear that June and Joho paid no single penny for the trip and that the only crime he feels they committed was taking photos while inside the jet which in turn exposed the man who sponsored the flight.
“I think sometimes our people become too petty. Those gentlemen were coming to see me. That aircraft had been hired and it had gone to Zanzibar and they talked to the owner. The aircraft came to pick them and bring them to Dubai. They never paid a penny. The only ‘crime’ was taking a picture showing that they were travelling in a luxurious airline- and it became a major national discussion,” said Raila.
Raila also noted that he has now fully recovered and is has resumed his daily routines.
