50 plus prisoners in acell from Moroto grabbed guns and escaped to a nearby mountain on 17th September 2020. It is reported that they stole 36 guns from the prison warders and took off at around 4PM.
According to the Daily Monitor, business in Moroto town municipality was brought to a standstill as a joint force of police, army and prison warders engaged the escapees.
The whole drama was confirmed by Maj Peter Mugisa, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) third division spokesperson.
“We (UPDF) are just giving support. They called us to give them support. All the details will be given by the prison authorities. All I know is that the inmates broke out,” he said.
Shocked Moroto residents could be seen watching from a distance as the joint forces pursued the inmates, none of whom had been arrested by the time of going to press.
One UPDF soldier identified as Corporal Walter Ochoria was unfortunately shot dead during the exchange of fire between the two factions.
“So many bullets are flying around the United Nations (UN) compound in Moroto. Over 50 prisoners have escaped after grabbing guns. They are seen running into mountain Moroto. UPDF has been called to help,” a source in Moroto told the Nile Post.
