Milele FM presenter Jalang’o is one of the most successful comedians Kenya has ever had. The comedian has come from far, thanks to his patience and hard work. From totally being paid nothing to becoming one of the most sought after MC in the country.
In a candid interview with one of the media houses, Jalang’o recalled how he was paid a packet of chips as his salary for his first gig.
“I was once paid with a packet of chips, and most of the time I was paid with handshakes. After five years, that’s when I started receiving money. My first pay was 300 shillings back in 2005. I had performed at Matungulu Girls High School in Ukambani. I was playing a comical role in a set book play,” narrated Jalang’o.
Before venturing into comedy, Jalang’o was a fisherman and fishmonger in Homa Bay Town. He later quit the job after some time to try his luck in acting by auditioning at the Kenya National Theatre.
Jalang’o also revealed that he had a childhood dream of becoming a pilot. Unfortunately, his dream was cut short by the biting poverty at home.
“I always wanted to be a pilot but I knew I possibly could not afford the tuition no matter how hard I worked. So I focused on my other passion, acting. In the meantime, I washed cars and did some construction work to put food on the table,” said Jalang’o.
