A random survey that was conducted to gauge the safty of meat sold in Nairobi has revealed that most retailers use toxxic preservatives to prolong the shelf life of meat.
The Ministry of Health in conjunction with Nairobi County fouund that 6 out of 40 samples had the cancer-causing agent Sodium Metabisulfite.
The six retailers that were found to sell meat laced with exxcess preservatives are (plus the amount of the preservative per Kg)
- Naivas at Gateway Mall, Machakos (3,386 mg/kg)
- Naivas Buruburu (15,604 mg/kg)
- Muthaiga Fine Meat Limited (8,783 mg/kg)
- Tuskys Kenyatta Avenue (63,326 mg/kg)
- Tuskys Makadara (512 mg/kg)
- Tuskys Buruburu (44.5 mg/kg)
Among the leaders who have called for closure of supermarkets selling meat with the harmful preservative include Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua whoo ordered the closure of all meat sections in Naivas Supermarkets operating in the country, and Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who closed all the meat outlets in every supermarket found to be selling laced meat in Nairobi.
Naivas Supermarket has suspended the sale of red meat in all their countrywide branches, and will only sell white meat as they await the results of independent testing.
“We will only be selling white meat for now in all our butcheries. Customer welfare remains paramount for the firm and that Naivas does not use or condone the use of any chemical preservatives for meat products,” Naivas Chief Commercial Officer Willy Kimani said
He said the company will take legal action against suppliers found to have supplied contaminated meat to Naivas Supermarket branches.
