Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua now claims that he spent millions to bankroll President Uhuru Kenyatta both in the 2013 and 2017 Presidential elections.
During an interview on Monday, August 1, Gachagua claimed that President Uhuru approached him in 2012 and asked him to fund his campaign which he readily agreed to do.
In 2017, during the repeat Presidential elections, Gachagua stated that he told both President Uhuru and his Deputy William Ruto that he was going to sponsor campaigns and rallies in the entire Nyeri region.
He allegedly acquired campaign cars, erected billboards, mobilized people to campaign for the re-election of President Uhuru.
He however declined to reveal the exact amount he used to fund the campaigns – only indicating the figure was in the millions.
“In 2013, Uhuru came to me and I asked me to fund to his campaigns and nobody had an issue with me. I gave money to him as a friend. In 2017 during the repeat Presidential elections, I told DP Ruto and Uhuru and leave Nyeri for me, where I used my money. I used millions to get cars, I erected billboards and mobilized people to run the campaigns,” Gachagua stated.
He added that he had earlier worked as Uhuru’s Personal Assistant in 2002 after the current President plucked him from the business world.
Addressing the blocking of DP Ruto from travelling to Uganda, Gachagua claimed that the plan was hatched during a meeting held over the weekend at the home of one top government official.
During the said meeting, Mathira MP added that another plan to block DP Ruto from touring the Mt Kenya region was also arrived at.
