Deputy President William Ruto has termed the Constitution Amendment Bill 2020 also known as the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) as the most dangerous constitutional change in in Kenya’s History.
The DP who was addressing leaders from Makueni County at his Karen residence on August 24, 2021, stated that the report would have rolled back democratic gains achieved in Kenya since independence.
DP Ruto stated that BBI would have brought back an imperial president, something the country spent years fighting against.
“The BBI was suggesting that we have a president who controls the legislature through appointment of members of parliament to the Executive and controls the Judiciary using an Ombudsman
“We would have an imperial presidency. Let us not lie to ourselves, let us not lie to the people. BBI was dangerous for Kenya and we thank God it failed,” the DP stated.
DP Ruto’s sentiments come at the back of report indicating that the Attorney General and the BBI Secretariat are looking to appeal the ruling by the Court of Appeal at the Supreme Court.
The seven-judge bench of CoA led by President Daniel Musinga declared the BBI bill unlawful and unconstitutional, handing a blow to proponents of the report.
DP Ruto’s criticism of the project was yesterday rebuffed by President Uhuru Kenyatta who hosted media editors at State House.
The Head of State called out the DP for constantly criticising the government he serves, and challenged him to resign.
